The Space Pen Issue
Do you really need a pen?

This is the curious case of NASA’s Space Pen. A story about ideas and creativity and the Manifesto we produced for Hermosa Creative Agency.

Artistic Approach

The creative agency Hermosa wrote its manifesto set in the space race between the USA and the USSR as part of the Apollo program in the mid-60s.

This premise determined an artistic direction with a vintage flavour but without losing the contemporary punch that required a forward-looking agency. So we designed characters with proportions inspired by those of Heinz Edelmann (Yellow Submarine) but with more geometric shapes to bring it closer to a more modern style.

On the other hand, given the historical nature of the script, we proposed a narrative close to that of a documentary, calm and serene, which at the same time also evoked the suspension of zero gravity: little action, slow animations and a relaxed editing except for the final turn.

Regarding sound design, the SFX were given prominence along with a soundscape that evoked the space and added a touch of intrigue. In this sense, we decided to do without music to avoid drama and keep that documentary tone.
